After winning the Class 5A gold ball in 2013 the Bluejays are once again back for more this fall. One major change for the program however is that Kelly Beeby will be taking over the head coaching duties with longtime head coach Rafe Watkins now in Muskogee.
Just like in past years however the running game will again be a main focus for the Bluejays. Running back and VYPE Top 100 selection Idae Alexander (5-9, 190, Sr.) will lead the way out of the backfield after rushing for 1,291 yards and 25 touchdowns last season. Guthrie will also have several other key skill players in L’Liott Curry (6-2, 210, Sr.) and Chance Whitt (6-1, 170, Sr.) starting on the outside at receiver.
With an emphasis on stopping the run the Bluejays will turn to a veteran group of linebackers and safeties to take the pressure off a young defensive line this year. That group of linemen will be a very talented and athletic group however and should come on during the stretch run of the season.
At linebacker look for standouts Beau Davis (6-0, 215, Sr.), Rowdy Reise (5-10, 195, Jr.) and Grant Towley (6-1, 190, Sr.) to once again make their presence felt this season. In 2013 Davis made 55 solo tackles, assisted on 76 more, made 11 sacks and recovered three fumbles. Towley could also put up a high number of tackles this season after making 60 solo stops last season and assisting on 40 more. As the youngest of the linebackers Reise will be able to take advantage of being in the same unit as Davis and Reise and improve on his total of 28 solo tackles from last season.
